Rapa Nui before humans: Geological history of a Pacific island
We currently offer a geotourism route in Rapa Nui or Easter Island. This route also includes archaeological and / or anthropological content.
If there is a place in the world whose identity is linked to its geological history, that is Rapa Nui. The island is not older than 2 Ma. and it is is largely surrounded by cliffs formed by coastal erosion on rock strata of ancient volcanic lava flows (Rano Kau y Terevaka).
To learn about its geological history, visitors will enjoy the spectacular landscapes of the island and visit some of its emblematic volcanoes: Rano Kau (SW of the island), Poike (E), Rano Raraku (SE) and Terevaka (N), the highest points on the island. This trip through the geological history of Rapa Nui does not ignore the archaeological legacy of the island’s ancestral occupation, and that is why we will visit places that tell us about this impressive human history.
